16-Team Field Announced for the 2017 Women’s Basketball Invitational
Eighth annual event features five 20-win teams
MILWAUKEE, WI — Sixteen women’s college basketball teams will battle for the chance to claim the eighth annual Women’s Basketball Invitational title when games begin Thursday, Mar. 15. The event, which features all mid-major teams, in 2017 will showcase 15 games before a champion is crowned the weekend of March 25 and 26.
The University of Idaho (17-14) of the Big Sky will kick things off when it hosts Utah State University (17-14) of the Mountain West Conference. The Idaho-Utah State tilt will tip at 5:30 pm in Moscow, Idaho on Wednesday (Mar. 15). Fellow Big Sky team Eastern Washington (18-13) will travel to San Marcos, Texas for a Thursday (Mar. 16) showdown. The game between the Eagles and Texas State (16-14) of the Sun Belt is set for 5 pm.
A battle of Texas is featured as Rice and Lamar will square off in one game with UT-Rio Grande Valley hosting Stephen F. Austin. Rice of Conference USA will bring an 18-13 mark into its showdown with 22-7 Lamar of the Southland. UTRGV posted an 18-13 mark in the WAC and will welcome 25-7 SFA of the Southland. The Rice/Lamar game is set for 7 pm on Thursday (Mar. 16) while UTRGV and SFA will tip at 7 on Thursday in Edinburg, TX.
The top of the right Bracket features two teams in the Northeast part of the country as 15-15 UMBC hosts Brown of the Ivy League. UMBC from the America East will host the 16-12 Brown Bears on Thursday (Mar. 16) at 7 pm. Charleston Southern (18-13) of the Big South will host 17-14 UNC Greensboro in another first round matchup. The battle of the two Carolina schools will feature the Big South Conference versus the Southern Conference.
20-win Milwaukee of the Horizon League will host a first round game as the 20-11 Panthers will host Southern Illinois of the Missouri Valley. The Salukis (16-14) travel to Milwaukee for a Wednesday (Mar. 15) tip at 7 pm. The final first round game of the 2017 WBI features Campbell University hosting Saint Francis (PA). The Camels of the Big South bring a 21-9 mark into the postseason while Saint Francis of the Northeast Conference sits at 16-14.
The second round 2017 WBI games will be played Mar. 18, 19 or 20 on campus sites with the semifinals set for Mar. 22 or 23.
